Families from
Yurburg (Jurbarkas), Lithuania Settle on the
Mesabi Iron Range in Early 1900s By Joel
Alpert, January 29, 2015 The
maternal side of my family came from the small town (shtetl) of Yurburg in western
Lithuania in the early 1900s and after a short period in Altoona in central
Pennsylvania, they migrated to Northern Minnesota to become peddlers and
ultimately merchants on the Mesabi Iron range. The
family names were Ellis (Eliashevitz), Krelitz, Craine, Laden, Lippman,
Bankman, Loceff and Bern (Bernstein).
They settled in the towns of Eveleth, Kinney Mine, Buhl, Virginia and
Duluth. Then
in the mid to late 1920s most of them migrated to Minneapolis, Milwaukee and
Detroit so that their children would grow up in larger Jewish
communities. These families remained
connected through visits, weddings, bar-mitzvahs and funerals though the
years. Then starting in 1998 formal
extended family reunions were held in Minneapolis, Detroit, Milwaukee, Los Angeles
and Montreal, each with over 100 participants. Another is being planned for
July 2015 in Los Angeles. more
